The Japanese airline ordered 31 A350 XWBs, including 18 A350-900s and 13 A350-1000s in 2013. This was a historic order for Japan Airlines, which was buying Airbus for the first time. Japan Airlines' first A350 should soon be delivered, and will be followed by 3 others this year. The new fleet will be deployed on domestic routes first, with Tokyo Haneda-Fukuoka for example from September 2019. The aircraft in domestic configuration has 3 classes (First class JAL: 12 seats, Class J: 94 seats, Economy: 263 seats, total capacity: 369 seats).

The A350 would replace the Boeing 767-300ER (30 units) on the domestic market. The wide-body aircraft will then arrive on the long-haul routes and will replace, in particular, the Boeing 777-200 (currently 12).
