Although dated 2013, this interview provides an opportunity to learn more about the plans of Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos, currently in full expansion.

In 2013, Bjørn Kjos thought that "the Dreamliner would be a fantastic aircraft" before adding "We know that it has flown very well so far and that its performance is incredible" in terms of fuel consumption "and that passengers love it."

Indeed, the Dreamliner allows Norwegian to offer low-cost tickets through low operating costs. Kjos recalls that his company had to rent an Airbus A340 to replace a Dreamliner that had a defective hydraulic pump. He remembers in particular the aircraft's kerosene bill, an older generation four-engine aircraft compared to the Boeing 787.

About the fleet, Norwegian's CEO explains why the 787-9 is his favorite version: the aircraft has a larger capacity than the shorter 787-8, and has a longer range than the 787-10, the longest version of the Dreamliner. He also added that he was not interested in the Airbus A350 and that the 777X would be too large and expensive to fly for Norwegian Air. Regarding medium-haul aircraft, Kjos indicated that the Airbus A220s (formerly Bombardier CSeries) were too small, with only 149 seats. The Norwegian airline should therefore keep its 737-800 with 189 seats.

The long-haul low-cost aircraft is also interested in narrow-body aircraft, single-aisle aircraft with long-haul ranges, such as the A321 neo LR, which it ordered in 30 units and the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in 98 units.

For several years now, Norwegian has been gaining market share, particularly in long-haul flights, thanks to attractive prices. Its tickets are made possible by low operating costs, linked to the use of the latest generation of fuel-efficient aircraft, such as the Dreamliner.
