Entry into service of the Boeing 777X still delayed

The first Boeing 777X should enter service at the end of 2023. Lufthansa had been named launch customer. The future American long-haul aircraft could perhaps enter service later than planned, in 2024.
The first 777X could be delivered in 2023.

Emirates has ordered a total of 115 777Xs. It is the largest customer for the wide-body aircraft. Etihad's initial Boeing 777X order was placed in November 2013 at the Dubai Air Show. The order consists of 17 777-9s and eight smaller 777-8s. In addition, the airline announced purchase options for 12 more jets.

A Boeing spokesperson commented:

"“We’re working closely with global regulators on all aspects of 777X development, including our rigorous test program. Our team remains focused on executing this comprehensive series of tests and conditions to demonstrate the safety and reliability of the airplane’s design. It is diligent, deliberate work and we are pleased with the progress to date. We also are providing regular updates to our launch customers.”

Consequences of this delay

According to Boeing's latest order book, the manufacturer has 320 orders for the Boeing 777X. Unlike neighboring Emirates, which has a massive order of 115 aircraft, Etihad's order is slightly smaller for only 25 aircraft, which represents about eight percent of total orders.

The arrival of the Boeing 777X has been delayed, but this is no longer a problem for the airlines. This is because when an aircraft is received, the airline pays for a portion of the aircraft. With the Covid-19 pandemic, international long-haul air traffic has slowed down or even stopped completely.

The airlines have therefore preferred to reduce their wings, with the early withdrawal of the A380s of Air France and Lufthansa for example. The renewal of Boeing 777s is therefore slightly postponed. Airline customers continue to operate their current Boeing 777-200 and Boeing 777-300 fleets. They have often ordered A350-900s or Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
