The order covers 20 Boeing 787-9 and 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft for a total amount of $12 billion, or approximately €10.6 billion, at list prices. The new aircraft will be delivered between the end of 2022 and 2027. The German airline currently operates 15 A340-300s with 279 seats and 17 A340-600s with 297 seats. It is therefore the Airbus A340s that will be replaced in the coming years. Lufthansa also announced the sale of 6 of its 14 Airbus A380s. The latter will leave the German company in 2022 and 2023.
Lufthansa spokesperson Carsten Spohr also announced the replacement of the 747-400s with smaller aircraft to reduce pressure on the infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport, the airline's major hub. He also points out that the delivery of Lufthansa's first Boeing 777-9 in 2020 will be an important milestone for its long-haul service.
